چکیده

If adequate examination of all newborn infants is done regularly, congenital dislocation of the hip should theoretically never be seen in the adult. Nevertheless many adults with dislocations untreated or unsuccessfully treated still abound in Canada. It is well recognised that people who grow up with unreduced congenital dislocation of the hip may have little or no disability. ln the Canadian North it has been observed that many Indians go about their business with dislocated hips and have very little trouble. A recent film made in Saskatoon by Dr Stewart Houston (1969) illustrates these points well and warns against over-enthusiastic surgery. I am sure that this is right.

The treatment of unreduced congenital dislocation of the hip in adults.

In their review of the late results of the treatment of congenital dislocation of the hip Muller and Seddon (1953) commented that between the ages of twenty-three and thirty-three years nearly half the previously satisfactory joints become troublesome in one way or another. When reduction of the dislocation has been achieved, the problem usually becomes one of treatment of a degenerative arthri...

Hip replacement for adults with unreduced congenital dislocation. A new surgical technique.

Total hip replacement for adults with unreduced congenital dislocation presents a difficult problem because soft-tissue contractures usually prevent sitting at the normal anatomical level. Extensive soft-tissue division or a high-level acetabulum leads to reduced function and poor fixation of the components. We describe a new technique for hip replacement in such cases. The shortened abductors ...

Reconstruction of the Acetabulum in Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in Total Hip Replacement

The mean age of onset of symptoms is 34.5 years for dysplastic DD...

Late femoral osteotomy in congenital dislocation of the hip.

We describe 95 patients with previously treated congenital dislocation of the hip who underwent femoral osteotomy after the age of five years. The commonest indication for surgery was progressive uncovering and subluxation of the femoral head; other reasons were coxa vara, long leg dysplasia and persistent anteversion. Femoral osteotomy for uncovering of the femoral head (Severin Grade III) in ...
